Top 10 Ideas for easing the transition into senior housing

Is your loved one moving into senior housing? Find out how to make the transition as smooth as possible.

1. Let your loved one choose the furniture or decorations they want to use in their new apartment. Keep in mind that the size of the furniture needs to be appropriate for the smaller space it will occupy.

2. Downsizing is difficult. Try to keep the special pieces of furniture or decorations in a storage facility so your loved one knows they will be there if needed.

3. Have your loved one's apartment set up and decorated the day they move in.  This will ease the anxiety of your loved one and help them avoid tripping over boxes and other accidental mishaps.

4.Work with the staff to encourage activity and socialization during the “honeymoon period”, which is usually the first 30-60 days of residency.

5. Check in with the staff for the progress of your loved one.  Be positive and encouraging to the staff members who take care of your loved on a daily basis.

6. Encourage outside friends and family to visit regularly.

7. Attend special events in the community. Ask for a calendar from the activity director and plan to attend together.

8. Share a meal together, whether in the common dining area or at a restaurant nearby.

9. Purchase "new address announcements" to help your loved one maintain relationships with friends and family living far away.

10. Subscribe to favorite or new magazines or newspapers or have current subscriptions transferred to the new address.
